Rhapsody for Mac

A match made in heaven. They may not have wanted to be together in the beginning but they learned to love each other over time with a little help from the good people at Parallels.

So, how do you get Rhapsody on your Mac?

I’m here to show you.

There are three ways to get Rhapsody on your Mac.

  1. Rhapsody Online – EASY
  2. Using Rhapsody with a Virtual Desktop – BEST
  3. Using Rhapsody with Bootcamp – OK

Each of these options has their advantages. Read on to find out what they are.

A side note on Rhapsody membership:
You can always listen to 25 free plays per month at Rhapsody. If you want to fully enjoy the service, I recommend signing up for the Rhapsody 14-day free trial. With the free trial you get unrestricted access to the service so you can listen to as much music as you want, totally free for two weeks.

To sign-up you’ll need a credit card. Note: they won’t charge your credit card during the free trial, but if you do not cancel before the 14-days are up they will charge your credit card on the 15th day. Rhapsody rocks and is well worth the monthly fee ($12.99-$14.99), but keep that in mind when trying the 14-day free trial.

Let’s Get Started

Option 1: Rhapsody Online – EASY

Rhapsody Online is the easiest way to gain access to the Rhapsody Music Service on your Mac. It’s super simple to setup, using just your internet browser.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Almost no software to install, just a small browser plugin
  • Works on any Mac with an internet browser
  • Fast setup time (less than one minute)
  • Listen anywhere

Cons:

  • Doesn’t support portable devices
  • Unable to download and save subscription tracks. Streaming only.
  • You have to be online to listen to music

What you will need:

Here are the steps involved:

  1. Go to Rhapsody.com
  2. Find a song to listen to. You will be prompted to install a browser plugin to listen to the song.
  3. Install the plugin
  4. Start listening

It’s that easy.

Option 2: Using Rhapsody with a Virtual Desktop

Using Rhapsody with a virtual desktop such as Parallels or VM Ware Fusion is my preferred method of using Rhapsody. A virtual desktop allows you to run Windows applications alongside your Mac applications all on the same desktop! For example, you can run the Rhapsody Music Software (a Windows application) beside Safari (a Mac application) – side by side. No powering off to switch between Windows and Mac. Everything is exactly where you want it.

Below is a video showing Parallels in action. You can see how easy it is to run Windows applications on your Mac.

Pros:

  • You can run Rhapsody alongside your Mac applications
  • Full functionality of Rhapsody
  • Able to transfer to portable devices
  • Import music from iTunes, CDs, directories and devices
  • Listen anywhere (you can always login to Rhapsody Online)

Cons:

  • Requires Mac OS X
  • Requires a Mac with Intel chips
  • Installation of software required: Windows, Rhapsody Music Software and the virtual desktop

What you will need:

Here are the steps involved:

  1. Install and setup your virtual desktop.Refer to the installation instructions for Parallels or VM Ware Fusion.
  2. Install WindowsRefer to the Windows installation instructions.

  3. Setup your Windows installation.Refer to the Windows installation instructions.

  4. Launch your virtual desktop.Refer to Parallels installation instructions or VM Ware Fusion installation instructions
  5. Start Windows.
  6. Open Internet Explorer on your virtual desktop.
  7. Go to Rhapsody.com and download the Rhapsody Music Software.
  8. Install the Rhapsody Music Software.
  9. Start listening.

Some things i’ve noticed when using Rhapsody with a virtual desktop is it’s important to have the amount of your system’s resources dedicated to the virtual desktop increased until performance is optimal.

For example, my Parallels virtual desktop is set to 1024 MB of RAM and the Video memory is set to 64 MB.

The original default setting was less than this and when I first launched Rhapsody it was slow to load and responses were delayed.

Bumping up the resources made a huge difference and now Rhapsody runs seamlessly alongside my other Mac programs.

Now you can enjoy Rhapsody on your Mac with zero restrictions.

Option 3: Using Rhapsody with Boot Camp

Using Rhapsody with Boot Camp is another way you can use the music service on your Mac. With this method you’re required to download and install the Rhapsody Music Software and Mac OS X Leopard if you don’t already have it.

Pros:

  • Full functionality of Rhapsody
  • Able to transfer to portable devices
  • Import music from iTunes, CDs, directories and devices
  • Listen anywhere (you can always login to Rhapsody Online)

Cons:

  • Requires Mac OS X Leopard
  • Requires a Mac with Intel chips
  • Installation of software required: Windows, Rhapsody Music Software and Mac OS X Leopard if necessary.
  • Unable to run Rhapsody alongside your Mac programs. It’s either Windows mode or Mac mode. Rhapsody only works in Windows mode.

Here are the steps involved:

  1. Run Boot Camp Assistant.
  2. Boot Camp Assistant helps you create a new partition for Windows and gets you started with the Windows installation.Refer to the Boot Camp Installation instructions.
